The main reason why most of us want to become location independent is the freedom to choose wherever we want to live. Usually, that means internationally. We’ve all seen the pictures of happy, tanned people lounging at the beach, typing away at their laptops while sipping a cocktail.
And while we all know that this is not exactly the reality of digital nomad working conditions (I’m thinking sand in keyboard, burnt legs from an overheated laptop, etc.), it certainly serves as inspiration.
With true location independence comes great responsibility choice, but there are a few criteria that we should always consider before picking a new destination. The most commonly listed criteria are availability of high-speed WiFi, cost of living, climate and visa situation, but a lot of resources forget to talk about safety.
Especially for solo travelling digital nomad girls, it is super important to pick a location we feel safe in, otherwise what’s the point, right?
That’s why we’ve compiled a list of the Top 5 safe cities for digital nomad girls, so pick whichever tickles your fancy and rest assured that it’s one of the safest destinations on the planet. Remember to always be as cautious as you would be at home, too.
1. Davao, Philippines
The Philippines might not be the first country that comes to mind when we think of safety. But Davao, the second biggest city in the country was actually voted as one of the top 10 safest cities in the world a few years ago.
It is smaller and less hectic than Manila, the capital, but still has a bustling nomad and startup scene. The cost of living for nomads lies between $700 and $1000, which makes it super affordable. Surrounding Davao, one can visit many stunning beaches for which the Philippines are known best. Super cheap airlines and an easy visa application process only add to the lure of the Philippines for nomad girls.

2. Montevideo, Uruguay
Uruguay is so safe that it is sometimes referred to as the Switzerland of South America. That’ll do.
One of the safest cities in all of Latin America, Montevideo is a nomad girl’s dream. Uruguay’s capital and home to half of the country’s population is a bustling metropolis, rich in culture and history but also boasts many modern shopping malls, trendy eateries and cool art galleries. But the best part? It’s beautiful beaches! The city features many pristine city beaches, a great place to relax after a hard day’s work at a co-working space or café.

The average cost of living is around $1500, but the standard of life is excellent.
3. Chiang Mai, Thailand
Probably the best known digital nomad hub worldwide, there’s a reason why Chiang Mai can always be found on top of the list of nomad destinations. As if the extremely low cost of living, relatively mild climate (compared to its southern neighbour Bangkok), near unlimited choices of delicious and affordable food, and rich culture weren’t already enough to lure any nomad to Chiang Mai, it is also one of the safest destinations in Southeast Asia.
There are enough great co-working spaces and cafes that you could work somewhere else every day for a month and the many markets, boutiques and malls make it a great shopping destination. Oh yes, and have we mentioned? Massages cost only $5!
4. Berlin, Germany
Long gone are the days when Berlin was a secret nomad hotspot. These days the word is out that Germany’s capital is an amazing place to work, travel and play for the location independent, including us girls.
Berlin is one of the safest cities in Germany and all of Europe and its great young vibe and startup scene makes it an ideal place to settle down for a few months, especially in summer. During the warmer months, Berlin gets transformed into an urban oasis, full of beer gardens, city beaches and street festivals. Despite rising prices, Berlin is still one of the cheapest cities in Germany and one could live off $1500 per month, not too shabby for one of Europe’s capitals.

5. Taipei, Taiwan
While Taipei is certainly not one of the cheapest destinations in Asia, it definitely is one of the safest. Famous for its bamboo-inspired skyscraper Taipei 101, this modern metropolis has a lot to offer.
Great WiFi is widely available and there is a whole host of co-working spaces to choose from. One of the biggest draws for many nomads is the food. With influences from throughout Asia, there’s no shortage of amazing food to try, and bubble tea to slurp. The shopping ranges from local markets and handicrafts to luxury malls and quirky boutiques, but the nightlife is what Taipei is best known for.
Not too shabby to spend a few weeks or months! The living costs start at around $1500 per month but can be much higher if you want luxury.
Now over to you, girl!
Have you visited any of these places? Did you feel safe?
